Household Toxic Mold - Menance to Health and WealthAuthor: Anita Toxic mold, otherwise known by is scientific name, stachybotrys chart arum, is a threat to both health and property value. This mold appears as a slimy, black-green layer that thrives on wood, drywall or paper in the home. Properties that have suffered from leaks or flooding are perfect hosts for toxic mold. A bathroom that does not have an exhaust for humid air generated during showers and such may be another breeding ground for this culprit. Toxic mold can impact the health of individuals that are exposed in very serious ways. Also, all molds, not just toxic mold, will one day eat away and destroy the material on which it is growing reducing the value of property. This means that your floorboards, drywall or other surfaces will eventually be ruined. In addition, mold can cause a musty odor that is unappealing and difficult to remove. Living in a home where this type of mold is present is detrimental to the health and well-being of individuals. The reason that mold is so dangerous is that it is technically a fungus. A fungus will produce airborne spores that will float around your home until they find a moist place. Once they find this type of ideal setting, they will begin to grow on their own. Mold also produces a byproduct called mycotoxins, which can exacerbate breathing problems such as asthma in anyone that has an existing respiratory problem. Even if you are perfectly healthy, being exposed to mold can lead to respiratory problems after prolonged exposure. Needless to say, living with mold is not advisable. Although mold can have a very identifiable smell, it can also remain completely unobserved by a homeowner until after members of the household begin to have health problems. It can also be a challenge to notice a mold problem when you are viewing a home before purchase. You can have a home tested before buying to ensure that there is not a mold issue. If a home is older, this kind of test should be mandatory. If mold is found in the home, you can still purchase the house, but you first need to insist that the property is professionally treated for the mold problem. You can have the issue addressed in the contract and if there remains a problem, you will not be legally obligated to buy. If only a minor mold problem is found, the affected areas need to be washed in soap and water and then disinfected with a bleach solution. After settling into a home, make sure to maintain practices that will not encourage new mold growth on the property. Keep areas that produce humidity well-ventilated and repair leaks immediately so that you can continue to live in a healthful environment.
